A potential customer asks an AI assistant to compare providers. Another types a question into Google and reads an AI summary above other results. Your business could be relevant to both, but the experiences are not interchangeable.
For website planning, compare how people use each surface, which pages answer their questions, and how you will evaluate visibility. Avoid treating a result in one system as a prediction for the other.
Compare the search experiences
ChatGPT Search sits within a conversational experience where people can refine a question. Google AI Overviews appear within Google Search when that format is selected for a query. Both can direct readers to supporting websites.
OpenAI explains that responses using web search may include citations. Google separately describes the role of supporting links in its AI features documentation. Neither makes inclusion of a particular business a guaranteed outcome.
| Planning question | ChatGPT Search | Google AI Overviews |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the interaction begin? | A conversation or question in ChatGPT | A query in Google Search |
| What should you review? | The question, follow-up context, answer, and references | The query, overview, supporting links, and surrounding results |
| What is a useful content asset? | A clear explanation that helps answer the actual question | A relevant page that supports the query’s information need |
| What does a single test establish? | One observed response in a particular context | One observed result for a particular search |
Check access separately
Search availability and model training are different issues. OpenAI’s crawler documentation distinguishes OAI-SearchBot from GPTBot and describes independent controls. Ask a technical specialist to review the relevant settings instead of assuming one crawler rule covers every purpose.
Maintain a record of changes and why they were made. A business may have different policies for public service pages, private customer material, and other content. Access decisions should reflect those differences.
Build answers around real comparison criteria
Suppose a buyer is comparing an ongoing service with a one-time audit. A useful page explains what each includes, who implements recommendations, and when a different option makes sense. Those details help a human reader even if no AI system references the page.
Write explicit explanations, keep them current, and connect them to relevant service pages. Avoid publishing dozens of near-identical questions just to create more potential prompts.
Use a repeatable review method
- Select questions from actual sales and customer conversations.
- Record the platform, wording, date, and important context.
- Note which sources appear and whether their content supports the response.
- Review available referral visits and qualified inquiries separately.
The purpose is to identify useful improvements, not to manufacture a universal “AI rank” from a handful of answers.
